Iorio reiterates this point in a different way further on in her article (drawing again on Berger): “Berger speaks about how art can influence our own capabilities: ‘A classical Greek sculpture increases our awareness of our own potential physical dignity’ (cited in Feagin & Maynard, 1997, p. 9). If I revisit the documented words of one of the children, ‘I am drawing a line which will be a frame. Then I will draw the loft inside’, how am I challenged? The child’s words present a theory developed by the child in regard to drawing. If I use the child’s theory, my own understanding of teaching and learning could be influenced, changing the materials, opportunities, and theories I provide for the child as well as the rest of the learning community. While in Italy a few years ago, I remember first seeing the Statue of David by Michelangelo. Something inside me changed in the presence of this piece of art; something that words could not express. Listening to the child’s words through this same lens opens me to the possibilities of new theories, philosophies, and developments.” (p.286)
